 USE OF STEROIDS!!!!!

With the passage of SB 474/HB 719 during the 2005 legislative session, §§ 11-404.1 and 11-404.2 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, Health Occupations Article, Title 11, Optometrists, was amended.  The law, which became effective July 1, 2005, permits TPA certified optometrists to administer and prescribe topical steroids in accordance with a practice protocol adopted by the Board. In addition, the law requires all applicants for TPA certification to take an 8-hour steroids course that is approved by the Board and administered by the Maryland Optometric Association in conjunction with the Maryland Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons.
Please note that optometrists who graduated on or after July 1, 2005 are exempt from the 8-hour steroids course requirement.

The Board of Examiners in Optometry has begun the review process and must submit an evaluation report which is due October 1, 2008. You can visit www.dsd.state.md.us to view the Board’s current regulations, Title 10 Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Subtitle 28 Board of Examiners in Optometry.
